Crete is a small universe, a cornucopia of beauty and treasure that provides the ultimate place for exploration.

The simple facts

Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, explore glorious beaches, impressive mountainscapes, fertile valleys and steep gorges, and become part of the island’s rich culture.

Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits of poetry and music. It was once the centre of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe.

Crete is mountainous, and its character is defined by a high mountain range crossing from west to east, formed by three different groups of mountains. These mountains lavished Crete with valleys, such as Amari valley, fertile plateaus, such as Lasithi plateau, Omalos and Nidha; caves, such as Gourgouthakas, Diktaion, and Idaion (the birthplace of the ancient Greek god Zeus. There are hundreds of gorges to explore due to the islands geography. Cretan beaches are also spectacular making Crete one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece.

At Event Horizon there is free and rented accommodation available.
